How to Maintain your Certification

Individuals who hold the CHES or MCHES certification must renew their certification every five years.

To do so, they must

  1. Complete 75 continuing education contact hours (CECH). These hours must meet the following requirements:
    • At least 45 of these CECH must fall into Category I offerings. Category I credits are obtained through NCHEC preapproved designated providers (such as USOPHE)
    • Up to 30 CECH may come from Category II offerings. Category II credits are obtained through other providers of continuing education
    • Complete 5 CECH of a “Continuing Competency Assessment,” which includes either:
      • A work performance assessment by a supervisor/ client (Category II), or;
      • An end-of-course learning assessment by a Designated Provider of Category I CECH
  2. In addition, MCHES are required to earn 30 CECH that are directly related to the advanced-level Sub-competencies from Category I and/or II for each certification cycle. All of the advanced-level CECH can be from Category II.
  3. Pay the recertification fee

USOPHE activities that earn you CECH

USOPHE is a designated provider of CECH and helps organizations be approved to offer CECH to their event attendees. Once approved, USOPHE offers the credit hours at $3 per CECH for USOPHE members and $4 per CECH for non-USOPHE members. Credit hours can be obtained by:
  • Attending a USOPHE conference, or USOPHE sponsored webinar or workshop counts towards 1 CECH for each hour of instruction (excludes lunches, poster sessions, and business meetings).
  • Presenting at a USOPHE conference, or USOPHE sponsored webinar or workshop counts towards 2 CECH for each hour of instruction. All presenters receive equal credit.
  • Authoring or presenting at a USOPHE sponsored poster session counts towards 1 CECH per conference. All presenters receive equal credit.
  • Serving on the USOPHE board counts towards 2 CECH annually.
To count any earned CECH at USOPHE sponsored events towards your transcript with NCHEC, you must complete the event evaluation at the event you attended and pay for CECH. Credit hours are then reported to NCHEC and should appear on your next quarter's transcript on NCHEC.org. If you have questions about your CECH, please reach out to the USOPHE Credentialing Chair at jkloosterman@centralutahhealth.org

USOPHE has compiled a list of sites where you can earn CECH self-paced online on our Training Hub. These are not offered by USOPHE and may be offered free or for a cost by the online training provider. You are responsible for reporting any credits earned by this method to NCHEC on your own using the Category II form.
